Argentina and Barcelona superstar, Lionel Messi has disclosed what his country’s national team must do in order to reach the 2018 World Cup final in Russia.
The 30-year-old believes that for the Albiceleste to play at the World Cup final for the second time in a row, they have to overcome the group stage which include Nigeria, Croatia and Iceland.
Messi, who said it would be great to play again in the final, was speaking shortly after he was handed the Pichichi (top goalscorer in La Liga) and Di Stefano award, a prize for the best player in the Spanish Leagues.
When asked the possibility of facing Spain in the final of the 2018 World Cup, Messi told Marca: ”It would be something incredible to be able to play in a World Cup final again.
“First we have to think about the group, which is difficult, and then we will see what happens.”
Argentina was defeated 1-0 by Germany in the final of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Messi leaves Argentina team
Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, has left the team’s camp, following a 3-1 loss to Venezuela in an international friendly played in Madrid.
Messi returned to international duty for the first time since the 2018 World Cup on Friday, but it was a disappointing night for the forward.
Venezuela put three past their more illustrious rivals, with goals from Salomon Rondon, Jhon Murillo and Josef Martinez.
Lautaro Martinez scored Argentina’s consolation.
The team announced after the loss that Messi will miss Tuesday’s match against Morocco as a precaution following a groin injury.
“The second half left us with positive things and the first half with negative ones. Better that they happened that way.
“We learned a lot from this loss. The situations we created were largely in due part to Messi. This match helped us to see how [the others] played alongside Messi,” Argentina manager, Luis Scaloni, told reporters after the game.
Maradona pays tribute to missing premier league star, Emiliano
Argentina legend, Diego Maradona has paid tribute to Cardiff City star, Emiliano Sala, after the striker went missing on a plane over the English Channel on Monday night.
Sala was travelling from Nantes to the Welsh capital to join his team-mates following his £15million move.
Sala’s plane was lost from the radar as it crossed the English Channel and the 28-year-old is now feared dead.
Maradona, a fellow countryman with Sala, said he was “devastated” to hear the news of the former Nantes’ star missing.
“I cannot even imagine [what] the family of Emiliano Sala is going through,” Maradona posted on Instagram.
“My wish, and that of everyone, is that you have landed at a different airport…”
Meanwhile, the search for Sala resumed on Wednesday morning after it was postponed overnight.
Andreas Pereira considering to join Arsenal
Manchester United midfielder, Andreas Pereira, is currently considering an offer from Arsenal, the UK Metro reports.
The 22-year-old impressed during his loan spell at Sevilla last season and was expected to make an impact at United this term.
But Pereira has made only seven appearances in all competitions this season and was often left out of the squad by Jose Mourinho.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s arrival at United could mean that Pereira is given more chances in midfield.
However, Pereira is keeping his options open as his contract expires at the end of the season.
