Eddie Hearn suggested Deontay Wilder’s proposed $50m offer to fight Anthony Joshua seems more like a scam than a legitimate deal as the two sides locked horns this week over a potential undisputed heavyweight clash.
WBC champion Wilder sent Joshua’s team a message on Twitter this week, demanding they check their emails for an offer he submitted worth $50m – or 50% of fight revenue, whichever is higher – to AJ to meet in the ring later this year.
Matchroom boss Hearn responded by admitting the offer was “interesting” but stated the finer details would need to be made clear before any agreement could be signed.
Speaking to FightHub.TV yesterday, the 37-year-old handler cast further doubt on the legitimacy of the offer, likening it to a scam.
“He’s [Wilder] got $50M from using Anthony Joshua’s name, to go out and to wh*re him out to try and attract the money.
“But that’s not possible because, one, they don’t have the rights to do that. But they want the rights to do that and that’s what they’re trying to buy. But we’re not really interested in people going out and using Anthony’s name to try and attract $50M for his purse.
“You’ve either got it or you haven’t. If they wanted $50M from Matchroom, they could have it in their account today. That’s the difference.
“With all due respect to Deontay Wilder, who I like a lot, he doesn’t have $50M. All I have right now is an email from a guy from Alabama who is telling me he’s gonna give us $50M.
“I get quite a lot of those emails. Sometimes from Saudi Arabia, sometimes from China, sometimes from Nigeria. Normally they ask me to send $50,000 first and then they’ll send it back…”
